Principal’s Message

May 13, 2020

Dear Mattos Families,

We are heading toward the final weeks of school with many questions still on everyone’s mind. We do know that we are out of school for the rest of this year and continuing distance learning till the last day of the school year. Teachers will continue to plan and deliver lessons and support to students, and parents will need to continue to support home instruction.  Our site will provide support to all through continued communication, collaboration, and responsive service.

Students with an IEP that indicates ESY or Extended School Year will likely have a distance learning model for ESY. Decisions are currently being made at the district level to address what ESY will look like and how it will be done. This is in process and our Special Education Department is continuing to develop plans for ESY.

We don’t yet know what next year will look like and a lot depends on how the current situation changes in the next weeks and months. As the pandemic we are all facing is happening on a large scale and none of us have dealt with anything like this we are learning as we deliver services and we value the input of our community.

As always please don’t hesitate to contact me if I can be of service to you or you have feedback on what is working for you and your family as well as areas you’d like to see happening. I can be reached by phone at 510-793-1359 ext. 65102 or by email at

Our teachers and team members, in addition to preparing for and doing instruction are involved in many proactive activities. Team Members are taking their own on-line classes to train and develop, volunteering at the school and in the community to organize and distribute learning materials, meals, and lessons, and are also supporting their own families. Our PTA, ELAC and SSC are continuing to meet and make important decisions about our school.

A question on the minds of many concerns how we will do promotion for 5th grade students. I will be working with students, teachers and parents to create an on-line promotion. We want and need to celebrate this milestone for our top grade level students to honor their completion of elementary education and signify that they will be transitioning to middle school next year. I do have some ideas regarding this but also welcome the ideas of our community. If you have thoughts you’d like to share please email me.
